SUNDAY ON ESPN: PBA League Season 2 Opens with L.A. X vs. BROOKLYN STyLES Quarterfinal
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Feb. 4, 2014) - The road to determine the winner of the second PBA League Elias Cup begins Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN from Thunderbowl Lanes with a quarterfinal matchup between L.A. X presented by Gobowling.com, owned by Los Angeles Clippers star guard Chris Paul, and the BROOKLYN STyLES presented by Concrete Software PBA Bowling Challenge, owned by actor Jesse Williams.
The PBA League, which made its competitive debut at Thunderbowl Lanes in 2013, returns with a revised format and revamped rosters. Each of the eight teams will compete for points in a head-to-head series of single-elimination team matches that will include singles, alternate-ball doubles, Baker trio and Baker team formats.
One point will be awarded for a win in the singles, doubles and trios matches with three points awarded for a Baker team win. Should there be a tie at the conclusion of the four contests, a one-ball sudden-death roll-off will determine the winner which will move on to the semifinal round.
The opening singles match will feature a rematch of the PBA Super Clash with 2012-13 PBA Player of the Year and 2014 Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions winner Jason Belmonte of L.A. X taking on 2011-12 Player of the Year Sean Rash of the BROOKLYN STyLES.
In the alternate-ball doubles match, L.A. X players, two-time Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi and PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III will take on Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. and PBA Tour titlist Jason Sterner bowling for the STyLES.
In the trios match, L.A. X selected Belmonte, 2012-13 PBA Rookie of the Year E.J. Tackett and PBA Tour titlist Andres Gomez to meet the STyLES’ Rash, Williams and two-time Tour winner Tom Smallwood.
The Baker team match will include the L.A. X lineup of Koivuniemi, Tackett, Gomez, Belmonte and Bohn challenging Sterner, Smallwood, three-time Tour winner Michael Haugen Jr., Williams and Rash for the STyLES.
Sunday’s winner will meet the winner of the match between defending Elias Cup champion New York City WTT KingPins presented by GEICO, owned by women’s sports legend Billie Jean King, vs. Jerome Bettis’ Motown Muscle presented by Barbasol in the quarterfinal round which will air Sunday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. ET.
The third quarterfinal contest will feature the Dallas Strikers presented by USBC, owned by former NFL All-Pro receiver Terrell Owens, and the Silver Lake Atom Splitters presented by Spiceworks, owned by comedian and talk show host Chris Hardwick on Sunday, March 2 at 3 p.m. ET. The final quarterfinal match between the Pittsburgh Jackrabbits presented by HotelPlanner.com, owned by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley, vs. actor/comedian Kevin Hart’s Philadelphia Hitmen presented by High 5 Gear, will air on March 23 at 1 p.m. ET.
